Leafs could look to bring back a former Leaf when free agency opens

Connor Brown was a fan favourite when he was a member of the Leafs from 2015 to 2019, but, unfortunately, he was traded as part of the Nikita Zaitsev deal to Ottawa. Last season, Brown skated in just 4 games for the Capitals before tearing his ACL in a contract year. Talk about a bad beat.

Brown was in the final year of a 3-year deal that came with a $3.6M cap hit. Having missed essentially all of last season, Brown will have some interest when free agency opens, but he likely won't be getting any deal with term or a significant amount of money. That being said, the Toronto native could find himself back in the blue and white next season if the price is right. One scout believes the Leafs may be able to get him for between $1.5M and $2M, which would be ideal if the two sides do elect to kick off a reunion.

Brown is a feisty winger that can kill penalties and play up and down the lineup with some offensive upside, having hit the 20 goal mark twice in his career. He would help replace the loss of Alexander Kerfoot and possibly Michael Bunting at a much cheaper price.

There's nothing out there, other than the report from this scout, to connect the Leafs and Brown at this point, but if we're operating solely on logic and emotion here, it stands to reason that a reunion could occur this summer.
