Campbell, a pending UFA, had suffered a minor injury, unrelated to the rib injury that has kept him out of the lineup for much of the last several weeks, and had been at "less than 100%", according to Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe. Thankfully, the Leafs trust Kallgren enough that they felt comfortable playing him in back to back games to allow Campbell some additional rest and recovery time.
The 30-year-old netminder appeared to be well on his way to cashing in this summer after a Vezina-caliber start, but he has cooled considerably since December and has missed significant time this season, which is likely to hurt his market value.
Campbell can still increase his value with a strong run down the stretch and a deep playoff run, but if he fails to do so, the Leafs will have a very tough decision to make this summer. If Jack Campbell is not the answer to Toronto's problems and if the Leafs aren't yet ready to pass the net off to one of Erik Kallgren or Joseph Woll, both of whom are still very green, they'll have to seek out the answer to their problems via trade or free agency this summer.
