The Maple Leafs were expecting Nick Robertson to make the main roster out of training camp, but then Fraser Minten surprised everyone and forced the Leafs to send Robertson down to the Toronto Marlies to begin the season. Robertson has started off on a tear in the AHL with five goals and eleven points through nine games and will now get his opportunity with the Leafs.

The Leafs announced this morning that they have sent down Pontus Holmberg to the Marlies and recalled the red-hot Robertson. The reason for the change is obvious, the Leafs need more secondary scoring and Holmberg is a defensive specialist. Additionally, Max Domi centered the third line with Holmberg on the wing at practice yesterday and it makes more sense for the Leafs to have a natural winger than center.

Last season, Robertson got into 15 games with the Leafs before missing most of the season following a shoulder injury, which required surgery. In his 31 NHL games, Robertson has 3 goals and 7 points, but will look to continue his hot start this season with the big club.

Robertson has plenty of reasons to be motivated and if he can show the same skill and effort that he has put forth in the American Hockey League this year, the he'll be an excellent addition to the bottom six in Toronto.
