Brooks was originally claimed by a division rival, the Montreal Canadiens, back in October, just prior to the start of the regular season after failing to earn a full-time roster spot during Leafs training camp. Brooks played just 4 games as a Canadien before landing on waivers once again in November and being snagged by the Vegas Golden Knights.
Obviously, as one of the league's top teams, the Leafs would have to hope that Brooks slips pretty far down the list on the waiver wire to even have a shot at claiming him - that is, of course, if they do want him back in the system.
If the Leafs do put a claim in for Brooks, they'd likely have to clear a roster spot for him, because if they were to claim him in an attempt to assign him to the AHL's Toronto Marlies, he would need to first clear waivers and stands a pretty good chance of being re-claimed by Vegas.
Brooks was a 4th round draft pick of the Leafs back in 2016 (92nd overall). He has 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points through the first 29 games of his NHL career, despite being deployed in primarily a 4th line role.
