One area where improvement is possible is in the top six, particularly on the left wing. However, bringing in an impact player may be easier said than done unless the Buds can clear out some cap space.
The Leafs were connected to the Vancouver Canucks for a good chunk of last season, mainly in relation to LW/C J.T. Miller. Miller has one year remaining on his current deal at a very modest $5.25M cap hit. The problem is that after scoring 99 points in 80 games this season, Miller is going to want a significant raise once his deal is up and the Canucks are not sure they want to pay up. Rather than to sit on it and watch Miller walk away as a UFA next summer, the Canucks are doing their due diligence right now to see what types of offers are out there that would allow them to recoup some assets for the 29-year-old winger.
According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Leafs are among at least 6 teams who remain interested in the former 15th overall pick (2011), along with New Jersey, NY Rangers, Pittsburgh, NY Islanders and Washington. The main problem for the Leafs here is that Miller would likely be a one and done in Toronto, as the Leafs would not be able to afford a lofty extension for a player who would be 30 years of age before his new deal even kicks in.
However, unlike the Canucks, the Leafs are a contender who may only be one piece away from making a real, legitimate run in the postseason. Miller might be that piece. The problem is that the asking price on Miller is large. Perhaps much more than the Leafs are willing to pay. Still, the fact that they're interested and can offer a competitive package for Miller is something that shouldn't be dismissed.
