Following another disappointing loss to an inferior opponent in the Vegas Golden Knights, there is some good news coming in Leafs Nation today that should intrigue the fans. Newfoundland Growlers goaltender Dryden McKay was named ECHL goaltender of the week. McKay went 2-0-0 last week with a 2.16 GAA and a .931 save percentage.

McKay was the top NCAA goaltending free agent available this year and was also the 2021-22 Hobey Baker Award winner, which is given out each year to the top NCAA player.

McKay played four years at Minnesota State University. He was impressive in the 2022 season, going 38-5. Surprisingly, McKay has never held a season-long save percentage lower than .924, nor a season-long GAA of higher than 1.76 during his entire NCAA career.

McKay famously received a six-month suspension for unknowingly taking a banned substance. McKay had a positive test for Ostarine, which resulted from him taking contaminated Quercetin vitamins to help protect him from COVID-19.

It's a long season ahead, but with McKay off to an exciting start, perhaps we'll see him earn a look with the Marlies at some point during the year.
