According to CapFriendly, before shifting Muzzin to LTIR, the Leafs also placed forward Kyle Clifford on IR. The move was a bit of a surprise, considering that nobody even knew that Clifford was injured. The injury may or may not have occurred on this play at the end of the 2nd period, after Clifford lost his footing and crashed into the boards at center ice.
The Leafs are currently sitting with a total of $5.543M in available cap space. What they do with it depends entirely on Muzzin's long-term health status. If Muzzin is expected to miss the remainder of the season, that will give the Leafs plenty of room with which to activate Timothy Liljegren and Jordie Benn from LTIR without having to move anyone. They can also activate Matt Murray when he is ready to return, but they may need to demote someone and roll with a 22-man roster to remain cap compliant.
If the Leafs plan on moving a body or two from the current 50-man roster, it opens up the door for a trade to bring in another impact piece as well, which may be necessary when you consider how important Muzzin is to this Leafs' D corps.
