Luke Schenn lands bone-jarring hit on ex-teammate J.T. Miller
There were plenty of storylines to follow in last night's game, including the return of Matt Murray, the Leafs going 7D/11F for the second consecutive game and seeing how the 6 new Leafs continue to acclimate to life with the Buds. Perhaps one of the more underrated storylines though was Luke Schenn's return to Vancouver and what his energy level and engagement might look like in the game.
We didn't have to wait long to see Schenn assert himself against his former team as he was physical right from the beginning of the game, including this massive hit on former teammate J.T. Miller.
Miller and Schenn are friends, which is likely why Schenn didn't lean into this one any harder and why he probably didn't put Miller through the glass. As you can see in the replay above, Schenn only takes 2 quick steps before gliding into the hit, instead of getting an extra stride or two off.
Regardless of whether or not he pulled up a bit because it was a friend and former teammate he was targeting, this is exactly what the Leafs brough Schenn in for - his intensity, his physicality and his leadership. It's only the regular season and he's already throwing the body around like this. Just imagine what he's going to look like for us in the postseason.
