The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the hiring of executive Derek Clancey earlier today as he will be brought in as the Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel.

Current General Manager, Brad Treliving, made a statement after the move:

"We are excited to add Derek to our hockey operations department. I feel Derek is one of the premier talent evaluators in our game. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and will play a big role as we continue our goal of building a championship team."

Clancey is a seasoned veteran in relation to other executives as he has 16 years of NHL experience with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, and Vancouver Canucks.

From 2007-08 to 2009-10 he was a Pro Scout for the Penguins before being promoted to Director of Professional Scouting from 2010-11 to 2018-19. He would spend 2 more years with the Penguins as Director of Player Personnel before heading westward to Calgary under Treliving.

In 2021-22 he was a Pro Scout with the Flames before being hired as the Assistant General Manager for the Vancouver Canucks in 2022-23. He has a winning pedigree under his belt with 3 Stanley Cups from his time in Pittsburgh.

Clancey had also spent time as the Head Coach for the Jackson Bandits of the ECHL from 1997-98 to 2002-03 - with the first 2 years being as a Player-Coach. He then moved to the Reading Royals as their coach for 2 years, spent one season as the Assistant Coach for the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL in 2005-06 and the following year as the Assistant Coach for the Dayton Bombers of the ECHL before starting his NHL career as an executive.
