Of course though, all eyes were on Leafs top prospect Matthew Knies. While the game itself was a lot closer than expected with Minnesota only winning 4-0, Knies was a factor from start to finish. Midway through the first, Knies made a beautiful pass to Jaxon Nelson in the bumper position on the powerplay which ended up in the back of the net.
Knies followed up his powerplay assist with a powerplay goal midway through the second where he tipped in a pass from Jaxon Nelson off the rush to put the Gophers up 3-0. Knies was dominant all game using his big frame to protect the puck and win battles, but also put his puck skills to use with his assist and goal.
He was also physical in this one, which shouldn't surprise anyone, given Knies' penchant for throwing massive hits. This second period bone-cruncher left the Lindenwood defender a little worse for the wear.
At 6'3 and 210 pounds, according to the Gophers' website, Knies is a modern day power forward that the Leafs desperately need in their top six to free up some space for John Tavares and William Nylander. When he signs at the end of the NCAA season, he will likely find himself on the third line to start, but will almosr certainly get some time on the second powerplay unit and could very well become a staple on the second line by the time playoffs come around.
