As they continue to carry the Leafs' offense down the home stretch of the regular season in hopes of securing home ice advantage in the playoffs, they are looking to become the first pair of Leaf players to register 100+ points in a single season.
That's right - in the 105-year history of the this storied franchise, the Leafs have never had 2 players reach 100 points in the same season. In fact, the Leafs have only had 2 players to ever score 100 points. Both Doug Gilmour and Darryl Sittler have accomplished the feat twice each. Sittler in 75-76 (100) and 77-78 (117) and Gilmour in 92-93 (127) and 93-94 (111).
With 12 games left it should be fairly easy for both Matthews and Marner to reach the 100 point plateau as they are 5 and 6 points away, respectively. Also, to touch on something mentioned above, Auston Matthews has a very good chance of breaking Vaive's franchise record tonight against the Dallas Stars in the final game of a 4-game road trip. During his young NHL career, Matthews has scored 6 goals in 6 games against the Stars.
