It has been a hell of a week for Matthews, and we're not talking about goals and assists. First, he and the Leafs were victim to a horrendous non-call in overtime against Arizona Thursday night where Chychrun grabbed Matthews' arm and stick right in front of the official and then proceeded to score the game winner seconds later. That led to a few days' discussion about how one of, if not the best player in the game currently has only drawn 7, yes 7 penalties all season while McDavid leads the league with 37. How is there such a difference between the league's two best players?
To cap the week off, Matthews and Dahlin got into a scrum near the end of the game yesterday, which resulted in Matthews' subsequent suspension today, which amazingly, took the league less time to review than Buffalo's fourth goal yesterday.
Sure, it's only 2 games, but the mind-blowing stat of the day is that the league has held 19 reviews for dangerous crosschecks this season. NINETEEN - and Matthews is the ONLY player to be suspended. Maybe the league should explain how that works. After all, it is the same guy all these players deal with right?
