Michael Bunting had assists on 2 of Matthews' 3 goals, including a gorgeous feed on the game-tying goal. After the game, Bunting made it clear, he is firmly aboard the Matthews hype train.
While Bunting may be just a tad biased, he isn't wrong. Matthews has 10 goals in his last 8 games. He leads the NHL in goal scoring with 43 and don't look now, but he's only 4 points back of one Connor McDavid for the NHL points lead. In fact, since November 1st, Matthews' 73 points lead all skaters, 6 ahead of 2nd place Jonathan Huberdeau.
So, while Bunting may have some hometown bias for his buddy Auston, his assessment that Matthews is the best player in the league right now is not wrong. Matthews is the hottest player in hockey. The line with he, Marner and Bunting is the hottest in the NHL, and if the Leafs can clean up on the defensive end, they'll soon be the hottest team in the league.
