NHL Insider reports Habs have traded captain Shea Weber
Habs Captain Shea Weber did not play at all last season due to a few injuries and recovery from surgery. At the start of last season it was also reported that he may never play again. Being so, the Habs placed Weber on LTIR giving them an additional $7.8M in cap space.
There have been no updates regarding a comeback for Shea Weber and it appears that the Habs could be moving his contract. TSN's Darren Dreger has reported that the Habs are in the process of making a trade and that they had been open to moving Jeff Petry and Shea Weber, but Dreger believes it is the latter.
It is unclear as to where Weber will be dealt to but it is likely a team that will use his contract to reach the salary cap floor to begin the season and then place him on LTIR. Weber has 4 years left at $7.8M per season. Trading such a well respected person and player, not to mention the Captain is a huge move for the Habs. Even if Weber wasn't playing he was still there to mentor the young players in the Habs system.
**UPDATE - Weber has been dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights for forward Evgenii Dadonov**
"First of all, I would like to thank Shea for all that he has done for and represented to the Montreal Canadiens. Not only was Shea an exceptional hockey player who played through significant injuries in an attempt to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal, he was also a great leader whose leadership will have a positive impact on our team well beyond his time with us. I also want to welcome Evgenii Dadonov to our organization. He is a talented forward who has produced at all levels since the start of his career."
