NHL stars predict who will win the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2022-23
A few weeks ago, before training camps began, a number of players took part in the NHL/NHLPA's annual pre-season media tour which included a stop in Las Vegas. There, they did most of their sponsored ad shoots and player intros for networks for the season, along with a handful of interviews.
Not only did they do all that, but they also had some fun with the NHL social accounts where they were asked questions like "Who is the best passer in the NHL?" or "Who will score the most goals this season?" The latter question featured video responses from Connor McDavid, Matthew Tkachuk, Cale Makar and of course, Auston Matthews, among others.
As players passed the camera to each other, the consensus among most of them was that Matthews would score the most goals again this season, with Ovechkin as the second most likely. That isn't surprising considering Matthews has won back-to-back Rocket Richard trophies and Ovechkin is the only player to win it three times, and nine in total. While players were picking between Matthews and Ovechkin for the most part, when it was Matthews' turn to answer the question, he gave an answer that only Matthews could give.

Smart on his part, if you take all the Leaf "curses" into account. He doesn't want to jinx himself on winning a third straight Rocket Richard Trophy. Who could blame him?
