Michael Russo of the Athletic spoke with Brisson and MacKinnon recently and was able to shine some light on the negotiations. Brisson said the extension talks are more frequent and will hopefully be done for opening night. MacKinnon too is hoping to have the deal done for opening night and, if not, he doesn't want to talk about it during the season. The 2014 Calder Trophy winner joked that he doesn't like the label of being the most underpaid player in the NHL which is understandable and his new contract wont be single digits.
MacKinnon, 27, is coming off of a great season with the Avs, putting up 88 points in 65 games. He was a beast for the Avs in the playoffs posting 24 points in 20 games. He is undoubtably Colorado's "guy" and will be a huge part of their core for years to come. While players like Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen already got paid on their first extensions, it's only fair that MacKinnon gets his.
