New Leaf blasted by Sheldon Keefe post-game for lack of production
After failing to score against the Buffalo Sabres last night, Maple Leafs forward Max Domi tied his career worst goalless drought to start the season. Domi has now gone 11 straight games without a goal, equaling his personal career low to start the season. His previous longest goalless drought was with the Arizona Coyotes to begin the 2016 season.
Domi joined the Leafs on a 1-year, $3M deal early in the off-season and was expected to not only provide some snot and sandpaper, but also some secondary scoring to replace what the Leafs lost in the likes of Ryan O'Reilly, Alexander Kerfoot and others. Unfortunately, Domi has just four assists in 11 games, with two of them coming in a third period comeback win against the Tampa Bay Lightning a couple of weeks back.
Following last night's loss, where Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner accounted for all four of Toronto's goals, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe called out Domi's lack of production.
"Domi is a guy we expected more out of and some contribution offensively. I keep going back to that Tampa game, and he makes two game-breaking plays that get us the win there and allow us to get two points. That is the kind of contribution you need from him."
While Domi does need to find his offensive touch, Keefe also needs to give him an opportunity and put him in a spot to succeed. One likely doesn't happen without the other though, so there needs to be a conversation between Domi and Keefe to figure out the best course of action. Otherwise, Domi's struggles may very well continue.
