Back in 2017, ZAR was an NCAA free agent that was highly sought after. He had just put up 63 points in 38 games, including 31 goals. The Oilers pursued him hard, but he eventually signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he spent his entire career up until the trade deadline last season. He was a part of the package sent to Anaheim for Ducks winger Rickard Rakell.
Knowing he wasn't going to get a big payday like former Leafs Tyson Barrie, Zach Hyman, Cody Ceci or Jack Campbell, spending the winters in the frigid Edmonton temperatures clearly wasn't as appealing to him. There's no complaints from Leafs fans though, as he is exactly the type of player the team needs on its fourth line.
