While Subban's reputation on the ice is certainly spotty, I can't think of a more deserving candidate than Subban for this award off the ice. He is the first player in New Jersey Devils franchise history to win the award.
Subban has done extensive charity work through the P.K. Subban Foundation. His foundation, which focuses on children's charities, pledged and donated 10 million dollars to the Montreal Children's hospital in 2015. In 2017, Subban partnered with Nashville Police and the Nashville Predators to launch Blue Line Buddies, a program aimed at improving relations between underprivileged youth and low income families and Law Enforcement. This year, Subban pledged to match donations to the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation up to $100,000 with the money going towards displaced young Ukranian cancer patients.
Subban is also an outspoken advocate for diversity and acceptance in hockey. In 2021, he partnered with and organization called "Hockey For All" as an ambassador. The program is aimed at helping to promote inclusivity. Helping to bring BIPOC and underpriviledged kids into the game with both cultural and financial assistance. As part of this amabssadorship, Subban appeared in a commercial addressing and condemning racism, sexism and bullying in the sport of hockey.
Between Subban's contributions to the hockey community through Hockey for All and his philanthropic work through the P.K. Subban Foundation and the Montral Children's Hospital Foundation, he has more than earned his name being engraved on the King Clancy Trophy. Congratulations P.K. and keep up the great work!
