According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, veteran blueliner P.K. Subban could be considering taking a short-term deal, presumably 1 or 2 years at a modest cap hit, in order to join a contending team to have the chance to both win a Cup and parlay his performance into a better deal on his next contract.
Subban, being a right-shot defender, plays a premium position. teams are in the market for right-shot defensemen every year, so I don't think his lack of signing is due to a lack of offers. I just think that the offers he's getting are from teams with whom he'll have essentially no shot to compete for a Cup, which is what he wants.
There are teams who missed out on fellow righty John Klingberg, who I'm sure would be interested in a short-term deal for Subban, as long as the price is right. Subban has now strung together 3 subpar seasons for a player of his caliber. Whether that's due to the situation he was in with a rebuilding New Jersey Devils team or that he's simply in a steep decline is anyone's guess, but I suppose we'll find out this season what Subban might have left in the tank.
