Jack Campbell was unquestionably the Leafs' MVP for much of the first half of the season. He was among the League's goaltending leaders in wins, goals against average and save percentage.

But for more than a month now, Campbell's performances between the pipes have left plenty to be desired and those numbers have paled in comparison to the MVP-like ones which earned him a spot in the All-Star game. In his last six starts, Campbell's goals against average is 4.00 and his save percentage is just .840 (116-138). Not nearly good enough to win hockey games in the NHL with regularity and definitely not the downward trend that Campbell wants to see continue is this final year of his contract.

To that end, there's been much debate nearly all season long about what the money and term of his next contract will be. At the beginning of the season, fans were calling for GM Kyle Dubas to extend Campbell in-season for fear of losing him to free agency. Now, due to Campbell's struggles, many of those same fans are glad that the ever-patient Dubas sat on his hands.

So what exactly will Jack Campbell's next contract look like, and will it be with the Leafs?

Sportsnet 590 The Fan's Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne discussed the subject at length this afternoon during their Real Kyper and Bourne podcast. Kyper seems to believe that Campbell's next contract will pay him as much as $6M per season, while Bourne suggests that the Leafs may be able to get him as low as $4.5M.

The segment can be found at the 40:22 mark of the show at the link below.

Campbell has stated emphatically on a number of occasions how much he enjoys Toronto, how much he loves his teammates and what an honour it is to be a Maple Leaf. Hopefully he and his agent remember those statements when it comes time to sit down at the negotiating table, because if they push for $6M per season, I'm not sure that the Leafs would be able to make that work.
