Hockey is a contact sport and sometimes things happen that remind us that, although it's just a game, it can also be very dangerous given the nature of the sport. Such a scene occurred last night in Nashville, involving veteran defenseman Mark Borowiecki.

Borowiecki was pursuing a puck that was fired into the corner in the Flyers' zone, but as he came around the back of the net hard on the forecheck, he stumbled just as Philadelphia Flyers forward Morgan Frost was engaging him. Borowiecki, because of the stumble, did not have an opportunity to brace for contact or protect himself, resulting in his head taking the brunt of the impact from Frost and the end boards. He dropped immediately and lay motionless on the ice.

Borowiecki's Preds teammates gathered around him as the medical team on site loaded him up onto a stretcher and carted him off the ice and to a nearby hospital for tests and observation. According to reports, Borowiecki had control of his extremities and was alert when he left the arena, which, given the gravity of the situation, is certainly a positive.

Borowiecki is as tough as they come, so when you see a guy like that go down, it is very concerning. We're wishing all the best to Boro and the Preds. Hopefully the veteran blueliner receives some good news today and can make a speedy recovery.
