With trade deadline acquisitions happening by the hour, the Boston Bruins might've thought they were in need of another one, not just because the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning just added to their rosters within the last 24 hours, but because Brad Marchand suffered a gruesome looking injury in tonight's game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Rounding the back of the Oilers' net, Marchand avoided the goaltender but then on his next stride, he collided with Darnell Nurse whose skate appeared to cut the Bruins' forward in a pretty bad spot. Nurse' skate blade made contact with the inside of Marchand's right leg. He was in obvious pain and went straight down the tunnel.

An injury of this nature usually leans towards a lengthy absence and with the season only 2 months from being done, there appeared to be a chance that Marchand wouldn't be suiting up for awhile. The injury took place on the first shift of the game and the Bruins were already without Taylor Hall who was out of the lineup with a lower body injury.

Fortunately for Marchand and the Bruins, he returned back to the bench and played an additional 2:19 TOI before the period came to a close. Some have credited Marchand avoiding a serious laceration to cut-resistant socks. Whatever the case, I'm sure the Bruins are just glad he wasn't seriously injured.

Marchand missed time to start the season as he was rehabbing an off-season surgery, he has 19 goals and 52 points in just 50 games as the Bruins sit atop of the NHL standings with 95 points, 9 clear of 2nd place Carolina.
