McCann and the Kraken agreed to terms on a 5-year contract extension worth $5M per season to cap off what's been a breakout year for the Stratford, Ontario native.
McCann was left exposed by the Leafs in the Seattle Expansion Draft this past summer. In 50 games with the Kraken this season, the 25-year-old has recorded a career high 21 goals and 33 points - just two off of his previous career high of 35 points (2019-20).
The Leafs had originally acquired McCann from the Pittsburgh Penguins ahead of the expansion draft as insurance in case the Kraken had selected Alexander Kerfoot. At the time, a lot of Leafs fans had felt as though GM Kyle Dubas should have protected the former Soo Greyhound and exposed defenseman Justin Holl instead.
After the season he's had in Seattle, I have a feeling that much of Leafs Nation will always view him as the one that got away.
