The big story for the Leafs early in training camp was the play of 18-year-old first round pick Easton Cowan. However, over the last few pre season games, it's another young Leafs prospect that is impressing Leafs fans, and apparently, the Leafs brass. 19-year-old Fraser Minten, taken with the 38th overall pick at the 2022 draft, has impressed in every game he's played so far. High energy, high effort, high skill level and high physicality. Just what the Leafs need.

Minten was named Captain of the Kamloops Blazers this summer, and his younger brother Bryce also signed with the team. The plan was for Minten to return to WHL action this season and dominate before moving to the Marlies or Leafs next season. Thanks to the excellent camp he's had, Minten may not make it back to the Blazers this season.

According to Sheldon Keefe, Minten has earned himself a chance to make the Leafs out of camp. His chemistry with Matthew Knies is undeniable, and the duo are skating on a line with Calle Jarnkrok today at practice. Keefe has also raved about Minten's leadership on the bench and on the ice. The question now becomes whether Minten can earn a permanent spot, or if he'll get a 9 game trial run, preserving a year of his entry level contract. I think he's exceeded expectations enough that a 9 game trial is the very least he should get, if he succeeds in those games, keeping him for all 82 is a no-brainer!
