Auston Matthews being one of these two players shouldn't surprise anyone. He is without a doubt the best player on the team and even when he's struggling to score, like he has at times this season, he's still 13th in points in the NHL and tied for 13th in goals with 15 on the season. The biggest thing about Matthews - even when he's not scoring, he finds a variety of other ways to contribute.
Not only does Matthews lead all Leafs forwards with 29 blocked shots over that 22-game stretch, he also has 11 primary assists to Marner's 9. Marner's 1.48 Game Score Average is good, but it's not Matthews' 2.05 GSA good. Matthews leads the entire NHL in this category over the last 22 games.
As for the other Leafs forward who currently sits ahead of Marner, well that's none other than William Nylander. It's crazy to think that just a few seasons ago, Nylander finished his season with 7 goals and 27 points in 54 games. Now, with how well he's played over these last two seasons, it's clear that Nylander has reached a whole new level in his game.
Nylander's 1.76 GSA is good for 4th in the entire NHL during Marner's 22-game run. While both Matthews and Marner out-point Nylander with 26 points each over that span to Willy's 23 points, Nylander has scored the most goals of the 3 with 13 goals. Nylander, surprisingly, has posted better GF and GA numbers while he's on the ice as well, with an 18.01 GF and a 3.84 GA to Marner's 14.44 GF and 8.12 GA.
It's wild to think that none of this really even matters because they're all on the same team. What a time to be a Leafs fan!
