Following the now famous Trevor Zegras "Michigan" pass to Sonny Milano which resulted in a highlight reel goal against the Buffalo Sabres, former NHL head coach and current ESPN hockey analyst John Tortorella pondered over whether there was a place for that type of a risky, but creative play in hockey.

Since that time, Torts has faced a lot of criticism over his comments on the matter, with many taking the stance that electric plays like the Zegras/Milano goal can absolutely help to grow the game. We saw that on Saturday during a meeting between the Portland Winterhawks and the Spokane Chiefs when a pair of Winterhawks players replicated the play to perfection.
Late Saturday night, after TSN's Craig Button caught wind of the play, he took a moment to log on to Twitter to dunk on Tortorella for his "hockey purist" mentality.
Torts seems to be in the extreme minority with his take on the innovative and dynamic play. If the goal is to draw in more fans, plays like that can go a long way in doing just that.
Perhaps it's time that the league begins to phase out antiquated hockey figures, or "old boys club" members, in favor of providing opportunities to hockey minds who promote creativity, which can help grow the game.
