Reporter Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal says that the Edmonton Oilers and Phil Kessel appear to have mutual interests. The now 34-year-old Kessel is still an unrestricted free agent and is presumably nearing the end of his NHL career.
Despite being on a bad Arizona Coyotes team, Kessel played in all 82 games during the 21-22 season, and he put up 52 points collecting eight goals and 44 assists. Make no mistake, Kessel can still fly and if he were to sign with the Oilers, he would bring even more speed to their lineup and he could slot anywhere in the top nine, which would be beneficial to the club.
Kessel spent six seasons in Toronto before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Kasperi Kapanen deal. He won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Pens, along with new Leaf Matt Murray. He was then shipped to Arizona, finishing off the eight-year contract he signed with Toronto in 2013.
