This has led to third-string goaltender Martin Jones becoming the Leafs' temporary starter and Dennis Hildeby joining the team as backup until either Samsonov or Woll is ready to return. Jones is no stanger to being a starting goalie and handling a strenuous workload. As the San Jose Sharks' starter for many seasons, he played in four, 60-plus start seasons, which included sixty playoff games in that span. Hildeby, on te other hand, has played a limited amount of games in North America, but is showing promise and has continued to develop in the right direction with the Toronto Marlies.
Since there is no exact date to expect Woll and or Samsonov back with the big club, it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that Leafs GM Brad Treliving is searching around the league for a serviceable backup goaltender.
Elliotte Friedman has speculated that Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving reached out to several teams across the NHL, offering a sixth-round pick for a serviceable backup goaltender that the team could desperately use.
In addition, Luke Fox of Sportsnet has speculated that Treliving targeted multiple goalies, including a few currently playing for divisional rivals. The list from Fox includes Anton Forsberg (Ottawa), Eric Comrie (Buffalo), Jake Allen (Montreal), and Dan Vladar (Calgary). It appears that every team declined the offer.
With Woll and Samsonov not expected back imminently, and Dennis Hildeby having zero NHL experience and limited experience in North America, it's safe to expect that Treliving will continue his search for a serviceable backup with NHL experience who can support Jones for the next few weeks. Whether or not a trade comes to fruition is another story.
