Connor McDavid owns the league's highest cap hit at $12.5M per season, so you would think that he would also be the NHL's highest paid player this season. That however, is where you would be wrong. McDavid actually ranks third in salary this season taking home $12M. Still a good salary, but the player being paid the most by their team this year is surprising.

It's not Auston Matthews, Aleksander Barkov, or Artemi Panerin, but rather Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin. Seguin's cap hit is only $9.85M for the length of his deal, but will be paid $13M in salary this season. It is somewhat surprising, given his cap hit and poor performances the last few seasons. Since signing his 8-year deal, which he will be entering the fourth year of this season, Seguin has yet to eclipse the 25-goal mark and has put up 50 points just once over that span. Granted, he did miss the entire 2020-21 season due to surgery and recovery, but he, along with Jamie Benn, were called out by Stars' owner Tom Gaglardi for not performing and living up to their contracts.

Considering that Gaglardi is paying Seguin $13M in cash and he has not performed to what he should be with his contract, the Stars' owner has every right to call him out. At 30 years old, Seguin shouldn't be trending downwards stat-wise just yet. Maybe a new coach in Pete DeBoer will help him find his offensive touch again, but as of right now, Seguin is on one of the worst contracts in the league based on his offensive output.
