Early Sunday afternoon, Sportsnet Stats released a stat that showed just how consistent Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has been. The stats in the post compare Tavares' time with the Leafs and the end of his tenure with the Islanders. The results highlight his continuity and dismiss the idea that he is digressing.

Before signing with the Leafs, Tavares had 129 goals and 159 assists, tallying 288 points in his last 300 games with the Islanders. Similarly, in his first 299 games with the Leafs, he has 129 goals and 166 assists, totaling 295 points.

This stat demonstrates that Tavares is aging like fine wine. When he signed his 7-year $77 million contract in 2018, many criticized the move from the Leafs, claiming it was an overpayment and that they'd regret the move in the latter part of the contract. However, Tavares has continued to show his worth, and he currently sits second in scoring for the Leafs this season with 21 points in 19 games played.

Throughout his five-year tenure with the Maple Leafs, Tavares has played a crucial role in leadership and putting points up on the board where he's been a near-point-per-game player even as he enters the later stages of his contract. Many have quickly written him off, but Tavares has looked next-level on the second line for the Leafs this season. He's been the key to the Leafs' success, especially when the team struggled to find footing at the beginning of the year. Tavares was at his best during the early-season struggles and essentially carried the offense, leading the team in scoring for much of the opening stretch before being overtaken by Mitch Marner for the team scoring lead on Saturday.

So far, he has yet to have a down year with the Leafs, and this stat shows that. Furthermore, these numbers put the narrative that Tavares is not the player he once was to bed. The truth is, haters are going to hate. JT has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with and looks to be paving his own way to being a completely different animal this year. It's not often that players get better with age, but JT is not just any player. He's a former 1st round pick and an absolute workhorse on and off the ice.

As it stands, in his fourteen-year career, Tavares has solidified himself as the portrait of consistency. With just two more seasons left on his contract with the Leafs after this one, only time will tell if Tavares starts to slow down. The stats don't lie and JT has been excellent as a 32-year-old this season.
