Trotz has coached in the NHL for 23 consecutive seasons. In the 1998-99 season, he started his NHL coaching career with the expansion Nashville Predators where he stayed for 15 consecutive seasons. He then signed with the Washington Capitols in the summer of 2014. Trotz coached the Caps' for four seasons, winning a Stanley Cup in 2018.
Despite having won hockey's Holy Grail that season, Caps GM Brian MacLellan refused to pay up and Trotz then moved on to the New York Islanders. Trotz spent the last four seasons in Long Island before being relieved of his coaching duties last month after the Islanders failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Trotz has won two Jack Adams Awards for best coach of the year (2016 with the Capitals & 2019 with the Islanders) and is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in hockey for his ability to implement effective defensive systems. Where ever he signs, it is likely we see an improved defensive structure there next season.
Of course, another possibility exists. Rumour has it that Trotz is actually considering a move to management. During Friday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Darren Dreger revealed that Trotz has been considering the move for quite some time, naming Nashville as a potential option. it is worth noting that Trotz recently purchased a home in Nashville.
That said, we do know that Trotz, a Winnipeg native, has met with the Jets at least twice since being relieved of his duties in Long Island. Trotz turned down an offer from the Philadelphia Flyers this week that would have made him the highest-paid coach in NHL history ($7M+ per season).
