Sandin has been out since March 19th, after he suffered a knee injury against the Nashville Predators. In 51 games this season, Sandin has recorded 16 points (5 goals & 11 assists).
Given how strong the Leafs defensive left side currently is (Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin and Mark Giordano) Sandin may have been the odd man out for game one of the playoffs anyways.
This is still, however, a big blow for the Toronto Maple Leafs defense staff prior to the playoffs. Even if Sandin would not have been in the lineup for game one, at some point during the playoffs one would imagine Sandin will be called upon if he is healthy. Often due to injury, teams who make deep playoff runs typically utilize at least eight defensemen.
With everything already clinched heading into Friday's season finale against the Boston Bruins, this could have served as the perfect warm up game for Sandin prior to the playoffs . But it sounds like his return will have to wait.
