When the 2pm ET waivers announcement came out, Simmonds' name was not there, so it did put some folks at ease, but there were still some in Leafs Nation who were curious as to whether or not Simmonds was potentially being protected for a trade.
The plot thickened on Thursday night when Simmonds was removed from the Leafs' active NHL roster and placed on the non-roster player list. Players can be placed on non-roster once they've successfully cleared waivers, for what that's worth.
Earl Schwartz, a CBA and salary cap aficionado, revealed that players can also be added to the non-roster list in the event of an emergency that might necessitate a personal leave. He also cautioned that, since we don't know what is going on, we should avoid speculating and respect Simmonds' right to privacy, especially if his absence is related to a family emergency.
As a result of Simmonds' absence from the team, the Leafs have recalled forward Alex Steeves on an emergency basis.
