Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving spoke to reporters on Saturday and his comments about the Leafs' trade deadline plans may be frustrating to hear for fans.

Although Brad Treliving continues to check in on high-profile additions ahead of the deadline, his comments on Saturday indicate that he is not entirely prepared to swing for the fences.
"Maybe it's not the sexy headline-grabbing move, but where are areas that you can shore up? And it's not, to me, about taking big swings. Where do you think you can help your team the most? Sometimes you historically look back, and this isn't saying we're doing this or we're not doing that but historically you look back and these attention-grabbing deadline deals, and how many have really paid dividends, right?"

In his second year as Leafs GM, Treliving was quick to point out that while it is always a bonus to add an upgrade for the playoffs, he does like where the Leafs are at.
"I like our team. I'd like to see if we can make it better by Friday than it is today."

The former Flames GM has made it known in the past that an upgrade at centre is something he was looking for, but with the impending return of Calle Jarnkrok, Treliving may not have to take as big of a swing as initially thought.
"I don't think you can ever have too many (defencemen). So if there's something there that makes sense to us..."

Adding a defender wouldn't be surprising given the uncertainty surrounding Jani Hakanpaa's injury and the inconsistent play of Simon Benoit, Conor Timmins and Philippe Myers on the Leafs' bottom pairing.
Six days out from the trade deadline, fans may have had their hopes of a major move dashed by the brutally honest comments from their team's general manager, but Treliving is smart and may be tempering expectations while working behind the scenes to complete the big swing many are hoping for.
