The 6'5, 225 pounder is a left-shot, which is not exactly what the Leafs need, but he does add a ton of physicality and sandpaper to the Leafs' back-end.
The Capitals are retaining 50 percent of Edmundson's salary, meaning the Leafs will take on an $850K cap hit. Edmundson's contract was already 50 percent retained when he was traded to Washington this past summer by the Montreal Canadiens.
In exchange for Edmundson, the Leafs sent a 3rd round pick in 2024 that they received from the New York Islanders in the Pierre Engvall trade and Chicago's 5th pick in 2025 that Toronto got as part of the Jake McCabe deal.
Perhaps the best thing about this deal is that the Boston Bruins were reportedly circling Edmundson and were looking to undercut the Leafs. Instead, the Buds swooped in and got their man before Boston had a chance to disrupt their plans. Tidy work there by Brad Treliving.
Buckle up, folks, because the Leafs are not done. Frank Seravalli has already reported that the Leafs are still working on some additional trades.
