David Perron does not dismiss the possibly of signing in Toronto
David Perron is a pending free agent and gave some surprising comments when asked about possibly reuniting with Berube in Toronto.
The 36-year-old Perron is set to hit the free agent market on July first as long as he doesn't sign an extension with the Detroit Red Wings beforehand. Perron is coming off of two productive seasons in Detroit where he registered 56 and 47 points respectively. Yesterday, the former first-round pick was on 'Leafs Morning Take' when he was asked by Nick Alberga if he had thought about reuniting with Berube in Toronto.
"I'm not trying to turn the page just yet because I really had two very enjoyable seasons in Detroit. This is a team and an organization that I have a lot of respect for so I want to make that clear. I don't want to create a bomb in that sense," said Perron about leaving Detroit.
"But I think definitely Chief is a guy that it was an honour to be coached by him. He brought the best out of me, we won a Stanley Cup together. He helped me go to the All-Star game one year and he's always had my back and I know he's always had my back... He's one of the guys that connected with me the most on a personal level and brought the best out of me and we'll see what happens."
Although Perron did not want to create the narrative that he is definitely not returning to Detroit, his final comments have left the door open to him joining Berube in Toronto.
Perron would not only provide the Leafs with secondary scoring the middle-six, but an additional weapon on the far-less talented second power play unit. He would bring a veteran presence and championship pedigree to a Leafs lineup that desperately needs to add more.
At 36, he likely wouldn't command anywhere near the $4.75M per season cap hit he accounted for the past two seasons. Something a little closer to the $2M-$2.5M range seems far more likely at this stage of his career.
In 1131 regular season games, Perron has registered 310 goals and 768 points to go along with 825 penalty minutes.
