"It is no secret that the Toronto Maple Leafs want to add a defenseman before Monday's NHL trade deadline, but it is still unsure just how big of a splash they want to make. One of the biggest names on the market when it comes to blue line help is New York Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh. TSN's Darren Dreger believes that the Maple Leafs are indeed targeting the 28-year-old defenseman. McDonagh is signed through the 2018-19 season with a reasonable $4.7 million salary cap hit, so he would not be a pure rental. However, it is that extra year that makes any possible trade for McDonagh an expensive one. Various reports have the asking price from the Rangers set very high. They are looking to rebuild on the fly and want young NHL players. You can bet any trade talks will involve names like Travis Dermott, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. The Rangers are not pressured to make a trade before Monday as they can wait until the summer to get what they want in return.
As I said on Sportscentre. I believe the Leafs interest is targeted on Ryan McDonagh. Not saying they get him, but still in on the fun. https://t.co/C09lptcJqa — Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) February 21, 2018
