The selection camp roster for Team Canada's World Junior hockey team has been announced, and to nobody's surprise, London Knights forward and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan is one of the thirty-two players competing for a spot for the tournament, which begins December 26th, in Ottawa.
Cowan, 19, was drafted in the first round, 28th overall, during the 2023 Entry Draft. He has been on a tear over the last two seasons, and there were questions about whether he would break the Ontario Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League consecutive game point streaks. However, because both would have been done over two seasons instead of the same season, these records would be unofficial.
The right winger finished last season with 96 points in 54 games, which included
34 goals to go along with 62 assists. He haa started the 2024-25 season right where he left off, contributing 14 goals & 11 assists for 25 points in 18 games.
Cowan's inclusion in Team Canada's selection camp should be no surprise to anyone. However, with missing the last four games for London, his participation at camp and possibly the tournament itself could be in question.
Before the tournament begins, Canada will compete against a U SPORTS all-star team on December 12th & 13th along with pre-tournament games against Sweden, Switzerland & Czechia.
Team Canada's coaching staff will look to lean heavily on Cowan in his second consecutive World Junior Championship tournament.
While last year's tournament was a disappointment all around, they hope to build on their early exit in the quarter-finals last year at the hands of Czechia.
