The Maple Leafs are currently on a three-game winless streak, having recently lost to the Boston Bruins 4-3 in overtime due to a defensive mistake by star forward Auston Matthews.
Anthony Stolarz was the starter in the game against the Bruins and played well, except for one goal, the Kastelic goal, which he admitted he would have liked to have had back.
It was expected that the Maple Leafs would return to Joseph Woll after the loss, given their established 1A-1B goalie tandem. However, Stolarz is expected to guard the net again in tonight's clash against the Winnipeg Jets.
As reported by David Alter on X:
This decision is not merely about selecting a starting goalie; it reflects head coach Craig Berube's current trust in Stolarz over Woll. Woll has only played one game since returning from injury, losing to the St. Louis Blues 5-1 last week, during which he appeared shaky at best.
The Maple Leafs need to make some changes quickly, but they seem secure in goal, as Stolarz has looked solid to start the season. It remains to be seen if Stolarz can maintain his grip on the starting role in this ongoing goalie battle, but he certainly has gained the favour of Berube, which is an important step to establishing himself as a number one goalie.
