Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed on Saturday that after the Flames had established their asking price, the Leafs were one of the teams who were indeed willing to pay up.
Ultimately, the Leafs were never really in it at the end of the day, because the Calgary Flames were not going to deal with the Leafs unless the deal was a runaway win. There is speculation that the organization is still displeased with Brad Treliving for walking away last spring and signing with the Leafs, which has certainly created some tension there.
Still, as Friedman mentioned, I'd also love to know what the specifics of the package were. Obviously it would have included a 2024 or 2026 1st round pick. Would the Leafs have offered Topi Niemela? Would they have parted with one of their young forward prospects? We may never know.
