As the Maple Leafs prepare to begin their 2024-25 NHL season against their longest standing rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, head coach Craig Berube has sparked controversy regarding the starting goaltender.
As per Nick Barden on X, in an interview with Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll, the young netminder expressed his excitement about playing at the Bell Centre, calling it "an exciting experience."
However, Berube clarified that Woll was never explicitly told he would be the starting goalie, stating:
Whether Berube's comments hold any legitimacy or are simply mind games, remains to be seen. However, Anthony Stolarz, who joined the Leafs organization this offseason, aims to make an immediate impact on the team and claim the number one goalie position.
Stolarz has had a strong preseason, showcasing his abilities after a Stanley Cup-winning season with the Florida Panthers. In the 2023-24 season, he recorded 16 wins, with a .925 save percentage and a 2.03 goals-against average over 27 games.
While it's uncertain if Stolarz can maintain those impressive numbers throughout an entire NHL season, he has yet to receive the opportunity.
Only time will tell if Berube was serious or merely playing mind games as the Maple Leafs look to start strong and secure a win in Montreal. We should find out who the starting goaltender will be following tomorrow's morning skate in Montreal.
