A report from The Athletic's James Mirtle surfaced on Wednesday morning suggesting that the Leafs' 1st round pick was included in their offer to the Calgary Flames for Jacob Markstrom. This led many to believe that the Leafs had designs on dealing their first round pick on or before Friday.
Treliving has since confirmed that the Leafs are more likely than not to keep their own 1st round pick (23rd overall) and use it to select a prospect rather than trading it in a deal to either help bolster their roster now or to move back in the draft and recoup an additional pick.
This differs greatly from how Kyle Dubas managed his draft capital during his time in Toronto. The Leafs were not afraid to part with their 1st round picks under Dubas, but so far in the Brad Treliving era, it appears as though they'll have kept and used the pick in both years - though last season's pick originally belonged to the Boston Bruins, coming over in the Rasmus Sandin trade.
There are expected to be some very good young prospects available in the 23 range when the Leafs step up to the podium on Friday. Some of the names we can expect that the Leafs will consider are EJ Emery, Stian Solberg, Cole Beaudoin and Michael Hage.
