Tasked with being the Leafs' starting goalie this season, Woll has shown in short stints that he can be a very good NHL goaltender, barring injury of course. In his time with the Leafs over the past two seasons, the most common comment from his teammates is how calm he is between the pipes and a lot of that comes down to how he prepares for games.
In a recent podcast with 'InGoal Media,' Woll explained how video review helps him prepare for opponents and allows him to 'just play'. On the podcast, Woll broke down a scoring opportunity of the Minnesota Wild and explains how communication between him and his defensemen is key to allowing him to focus on making the save on the short-side shot instead of worrying about the back-door tap-in.
Woll's preparation and calmness is going to be a major factor this season as he is expected to carry the load for the Leafs between the pipes. The Leafs and Woll spent the summer re-evaluating how he trains in the hopes that it limits his injury issues that became prevalent in their first-round loss to the Boston Bruins last season.
In 36 career regular season NHL games, Woll is 21-13-1 and has posted a 2.76 GAA and .912 save percentage. His play earned him a 3-year extension with the Leafs early this off-season that will kick in next year.
