The Calgary Flames have completed a 3 way trade with the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils that will see RHD Chris Tanev heading to the Lone Star State. Tanev has been on the Leafs radar all season, but the reported asking price of a first round pick and possibly more for retention was just too high.
The Stars managed to avoid parting with a first, instead sending a 2024 second rounder, prospect Artem Grishnikov, and a conditional 2026 third rounder to the Flames. The Devils, for helping with salary retention on Tanev's deal, get a 4th round pick. Dallas also picked up prospect Cole Brady in the deal.
In the end, Dallas paid a 2024 second, a prospect drafted in the second round, a 4th round pick and a conditional third for Tanev. That's is a hefty price for a 34 year old, oft-injured defenceman. Honestly, I'm glad the Leafs didn't pay that price to get him. The fit may have been there, but the price was just too high.
