The Leafs and Mitch Marner have been rumoured to be considering a mutual parting of ways all off-season thus far, and the Islanders in particular could use a winger of his calibre. Apparently, the two teams are discussing something big.
Noah Dobson and Matt Barzal may be one of the requirements for such a move, but both could be deemed untouchable, and whether or not the Islanders would like to pay the price if it involves one of those players is up for debate.
Ryan Pulock or Adam Pelech could be some of the secondary options needed to bring Toronto more defensive depth, but they are both 29 years old, which might not be the age Toronto is looking for if they want a 'relatively young' asset on the blueline.
Alexander Romanov will be a huge part of the Islanders future, and giving up a big piece needs to be done to make a possible trade for a star winger go through.
Ilya Sorokin, who on a good day is one of the best goaltenders in a position Toronto desperately needs, is rumoured to be unhappy with his situation on Long Island. However, with his partner Varlamov getting up there in age, letting go of Sorokin could be a dangerous bet.
Remember that Marner controls his destiny due to a no-move clause in his contract. Even if he does waive, it's unrealistic to expect the Leafs to pull the trigger unless they get an offer they truly like.
