The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost yet another young player this off-season as Brock Caufield has opted to move on. This comes on the same day that the organization also lost goalie prospect and former Hobey Baker Award winner to the LA Kings.
As per @TonyAndrock on X:
Last year, Caufield suited up for the ECHL affiliate of the Maple Leafs, the Newfoundland Growlers. The right winger put up 12G, 20A, for a total of 32 points in 63 GP in the 2023-24 season. Caufield's new deal is an ECHL contract with the affiliate of the Flyers organization.
Caufield is 25 years old and has yet to suit up in the NHL. While the older Caufield brother's road to the NHL seems to be a long shot, the fact that he shares the same DNA as his younger brother Cole gives him a chance.
Unfortunately, there are only so many contracts to go around in Toronto, and with the Leafs having signed a handful of players to AHL deals already this summer, perhaps Caufield simply saw the writing on the wall and opted to sign with a team that could give him a clearer path to the NHL. Time will tell.
