As it stands at the moment, the Toronto Maple Leafs have one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL with a very low combined cap hit.
Joseph Woll has returned from injury and has gotten steadily better with each start, winning each of his last 5 starts. He and goaltending partner Anthony Stolarz both have excellent save percentages and goals against averages to begin the season.
The decision on who to start on any given night is a difficult one for Craig Berube. However, instead of sticking with Woll, who picked up a 5-3 win over Tampa on Saturday, Berube has decided to switch things up with Anthony Stolarz getting the start tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks.
With the Blackhawks in town, Maple Leafs scouts will also have the chance to watch Taylor Hall, who could make an interesting trade target at this season's trade deadline.
It was thought that the Maple Leafs' goalie controversy was officially over with Woll emerging as the starter. It looks like Craig Berube isn't entirely convinced yet, or is more than content to run two goaltenders with great stats in the 2024-25 season. As far as issues go, it's a great one to have.
It's certainly much different than last season, when Ilya Samsonov, who was recently responsible for a major blunder in a blowout loss for Vegas, just couldn't seem to find the consistency the Leafs needed.
If Stolarz and Woll can continue on their current path, goaltending consistency is no longer a concern in Toronto.
