The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to try and find a solution for their problems on their blueline and it won't be easy. Of course all eyes are focused on Alex Pietrangelo, however the Blues defenseman will break the bank if he hits the open market and there's not really any guarantee the Leafs can pay up. While he might not be a top four guy who can help on the power play like Pietrangelo and Krug, Michael Traikos of The Toronto Sun believes former Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki is the perfect fit for the Leafs. Borowiecki has already confirmed he'll hit free agency and a move to Toronto would be pretty easy."First off, Borowiecki's a fighter. And by that, we don't mean that he is an enforcer (although he did have two fights last season). But rather, that he competes. He's gritty. He gets his hands dirty. He ranked third amongst defensemen in the league with 199 hits this year and was 21st overall with 120 blocked shots. The Leafs did not have anyone inside the top-30 in either category.
Borowiecki does all the little things that not enough of Toronto's players seem willing to do.
After all, this is a team whose toughest player last season might have been Jason Spezza, who sparked a come-from-behind win in Game 4 against the Blue Jackets by dropping the gloves. And when a 37-year-old former No. 1 overall pick has to fight your team's battles, it's no surprise that Toronto has not won a playoff round in each of the past four years."Borowiecki's agent confirmed that the defenseman would be open to the idea of following Jason Spezza and signing with the rival Leafs.
