"Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos's next game check will be a bit lighter thanks to an incident with Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly on Tuesday night.
The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety fined Stamkos $5,000, the maximum allowed by the collective bargaining agreement, as the ruled the play shown below as a «dangerous trip.»
After going the first nine years of his NHL career without a single fine, this is the second time Stamkos has been hit with one this season. He was fined $5,000 for a water bottle squirting incident against the New York Rangers back in November. You might be surprised to learn that Stamkos leads the Lightning with 53 penalty minutes this season. What a thug!
Meanwhile, Rielly and the Leafs locker room did not seem too upset over the play. "
